BBQ Taste Test 2022: The Winners

Fire up the grills, these are the best burgers, sausages and kebabs to buy this summer

bbq taste test

We don’t want to tempt fate, but it looks like warmer weather may be on the way (fingers crossed), meaning it’s finally time to dust off the BBQ, wheel out the garden furniture and start compiling your summer shopping list.

Perfect timing, we say, because the results are in for The Good Housekeeping Institute’s big BBQ Taste Test. Our trusted panel tasted a whopping 122 products from supermarkets, online butchers and independents to bring you the tastiest spread for al fresco entertaining.

It was a clean sweep for ASDA, who took the top spot in both our classic and flavoured burger taste tests, while M&S reigned supreme in the sausage department.

An impressive year of innovation in the meat-free market ensures veggies and vegans are well catered for too; with a comprehensive line-up of meat-free burgers and plant-based sausages to tuck into.

For something a little different, there’s also a selection of meat kebabs, which will provide a stunning centrepiece when hosting garden guests.

And to wash it all down? Simply head here to stock your fridge with summer-ready champagne and English sparkling wine, as well as non-alcoholic wines, beers and spirits.

Here are the winners of the GHI's BBQ taste test 2022...

best bbq food

ASDA Extra Special Ultimate Salt and Pepper British Beef Burger, £3.30 for 2,

Score: 77/100

Our winning beef burger is packed with bold, umami flavours and perfectly seasoned with simple salt and cracked black pepper. A certified crowd-pleaser for all the family; all that’s left for you to do is pile inside a brioche bun and top as you please.

Best flavoured burger

best bbq food

ASDA Extra Special British Beef Burger with Truffle and Parmesan Melt, £3.30 for 2, Score: 86/100

You either love or loathe truffle, but our panel couldn’t get enough of this succulent beef burger topped with a decadent black truffle and parmesan cheese melt. Oh-so indulgent, the cheese topping is almost Bechamel-like in flavour, while chives add piquancy and freshness.

BEST SAUSAGES

The GHI undertook the ultimate sausage taste test, sampling 18 bangers from the leading supermarkets and independent butchers to find the very best for your barbie.

best bbq food

M&S Bacon & Cheese Sausage Swirl, £4.50 for 1, Score: 85/100

These chipolata swirls are packed with cracked black pepper, cheese, herbs and smoky bacon bits, before being finished with a “mouth-watering” BBQ sauce. Enjoy fresh off the BBQ in a soft, floury bun with ketchup and fiery mustard (or a bit of both!).

BEST KEBABS

Whether served as a party starter before the main event or as the centrepiece of your BBQ spread, we tried 18 meat kebabs and these are the ones to steal the show this summer.

Best chicken kebab

best bbq food

Farmison Yakitori Chicken Skewers, £10.95 for 400g, Score: 85/100

The quality of Farmison’s kebabs was clear from the get-go; tender, corn-fed chicken chunks marinaded in a seriously aromatic five spice-style blend, complete with skewers to thread yourself at home. After grilling, the meat became lightly charred and caramelised – as good as any we’ve eaten in a Japanese restaurant, if we do say so ourselves!

Best lamb kebab

best bbq food

Aldi Ashfields Grill Garlic & Rosemary Lamb Kebabs, £2.99 for 320g, Score: 83/100

Our winning lamb kebab (and best budget buy) scored highly with our panel, thanks to its flavourful medley of fresh mint, roasted garlic and mature British lamb mince. Serve with tabbouleh and hummus for a simple – but no less special – summer lunch.

In-store only

Best beef kebab

best bbq food

M&S Master Grill 2 British Rump Steak Kebabs with a BBQ Beef Marrow Glaze, £11 for 500g, Score: 81/100

These rump steak kebabs are generous in size… but, if we’re being honest, too good to share! The addition of fresh peppers adds a lighter contrast to the meatier kebabs on test, but it was the marrow-infused BBQ glaze that stole the show, hitting every spicy, sweet and smoky high note. Delicious.

BEST MEAT-FREE BURGERS

Our BBQ tasting panel fired up the grill to cook an impressive line-up of 18 veggie and vegan burgers from the leading supermarkets and pioneering plant-based brands. These are the ones that were love at first bite...

Best vegan burger

best bbq food

Beyond Meat Beyond Burger, £4 for 2, Score: 86/100

Our winning meat-free alternative tastes every bit as authentic as a traditional burger – even achieving a tell-tale BBQ char and smoky aroma. The flavour is equally convincing, with rich, umami notes and “spot on” seasoning.

Best vegetarian burger

best bbq food

Waitrose & Partners Chilli Halloumi Burgers, £4.25 for 2, Score: 77/100

Our panel couldn’t wait to get their hands on these halloumi burgers after their sweet and spicy aroma filled the testing kitchen. There’s all the expected salty deliciousness from the halloumi, with a pop of vibrant sundried tomato and chilli for balance. We’ll be serving these in wraps with fresh salad all summer long.

Available in-store and online from 11th May

BEST MEAT-FREE SAUSAGES

We tried 17 sausages suitable for vegetarians and vegans, only the ones with the tastiest textures, convincing plant-based skin and delicious herbs and seasoning found a place in our line-up.

best bbq food

Tesco Plant Chef Cumberland Style Bangers, £1.45 for 6, Score: 89/100

Tesco’s veggie bangers also take the best budget crown, meaning you can take care of the pennies without compromising on a quality BBQ spread. A convincing veggie stand-in, they’re full of unctuous, umami flavour and (thanks to the textured pea protein) offer the same tender texture as a traditional sausage.
